Mitsubishi Electric Slashes Microwave/RF Amplifier
Design Time with New "Design Accelerator Kit"
for SMD High-Power GaAs FET Family

Includes DataSurveyor™ Processing Software That Provides
Graphical View of Actual In-Circuit MGF09XXA Device Performance

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — February 12, 2002 — To give design engineers the fastest possible way of starting microwave and RF power amplifier designs, the Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc., has launched a new software-based Design Accelerator Kit for its MGF09XXA family of SMD High-Power GaAs FETs. A significant upgrade from the starter kit announced in May 2001, the new Design Accelerator Kit features Mitsubishi Electric’s DataSurveyor™ processing software, which enables designers to graphically view a MGF09XXA device’s in-circuit performance data throughout the family’s 0.5- to 6-GHz frequency range — a giant leap beyond synthesized performance data.

The Design Accelerator Kit comes equipped with a CD-ROM containing the DataSurveyor software, samples of each device in the MGF09XXA family, two reference boards (one fully tuned and one untuned), and reference designs for several single-stage and push-pull amplifier applications.

The kit currently showcases the MGF0915A, the family’s highest-powered product at 36 dBm, mounted on a fully tuned board for the 2.5- to 2.7-GHz frequency range. The MGF0915A is a popular choice for applications such as tower-top antennas and customer premise equipment in the Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) and Wireless Local Loop (WLL) frequency bands.

The DataSurveyor software included with the kit enables engineers to mathematically process and manipulate performance data for a MGF09XXA device to learn its optimal operational characteristics in an actual circuit. Engineers can use this data to quickly validate anticipated device performance over several different drive and biasing conditions.

The reference boards offer the unique feature of being machine-assembled application circuits that are tunable using special zero-ohm resistors as jumpers. Combining this jumper capability with electromagnetic modeling software enables engineers to turn around their designs with fewer or no iterations, hastening the process from design conception to production and making routine the characterization of discrete components and their associated footprints.

"We developed the Design Accelerator Kit to give design engineers everything they need to perform meaningful design work in as few as 10 minutes," said Bryon Gutow, senior product marketing manager for microwave and RF products at Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. "We continue to provide customers with whatever tools we can to reduce or eliminate design obstacles."
